Circuit Court Judge Jeff Morrow Died Overnight of Heart Attack

The Jacksonville legal community arrived in their offices this morning to heartbreaking news:  Circuit Court Judge Jeff Morrow died last night, of a heart attack.  He was 56 years old.

The tragic news spread quickly through Duval county.  I heard from my good friend, criminal defense attorney Whitney Lonker, via text.

“I’m crying my eyes out.  I adored him, and had several cases in his division,” she said.

Her sentiments are echoed by many.  I used to live in Riverside, and I would see Judge Morrow having breakfast in Avondale, or working out at the YMCA.

Just yesterday, Judge Morrow was in the news in the Deangelo Thomas case.  A jury had recommended last month that Thomas be sentenced to life for killing a Navy Chief petty officer in a burglary last year.  Judge Morrow was to have to decide whether Thomas should receive the death penalty.

Judge Morrow was elected in 2008.  He presided over felony criminal cases.  Prior to that, he was a very well-respected attorney, and was a mentor for young attorneys.
